Before you purchase your next computer, make a plan out what your budget is, and what you are going to use the computer for. If you are a general Internet user, surf the web, use IM and download music, the odds are you'll just need a basic system. Any AMD Sempron 2400+ or higher or Intel Celeron 2.4GHz or higher will be more than adequate for that task.

If you are a gamer, I highly advise you build your own system or have one built for you. The reason being, there is a very small amount of OEM builders who use AMD chips in their systems. For gaming, you want AMD, there is no if ands or buts about it. For the best gaming experience you want an AMD Athlon XP 3200+ or higher or an AMD Athlon 64. Any of the AMD Athlon 64 series will be more than adequate.

Plasma vs LCD

The ADVANTAGES of Plasma over LCD are:

1. Larger screen size availability.

2. Better contrast ratio and ability to render deeper blacks.

3. Better color accuracy and saturation.

4. Better motion tracking (little or no motion lag in fast moving images).

The DISADVANTAGES of Plasma vs LCD include:

1. Plasma TVs are more susceptible to burn-in of static images. However, this problem has diminished greatly in recent years as a result of the incorporation "pixel orbiting" and related technologies.

2. Plasma TVs generate more heat than LCDs, due to the need to light of phosphors to create the images.

3. Does not perform as well at higher altitudes.

4. Potentially shorter display life span - this used to be the case. Early Plasmas had 30,000 hours or 8 hrs of viewing a day for 9 years, which was less than LCD. However, screen life span has now improved and 60,000 hour life span rating are now common, with some sets rated as high as 100,000 hours, due to technology improvements.

LCD television ADVANTAGES over Plasma include:

1. No burn-in of static images.

2. Cooler running temperature.

3. No high altitude use issues.

4. Increased image brightness over Plasma, which makes LCD TVs better for viewing in brightly lit rooms.

5. Lighter weight (when comparing same screen sizes) than Plasma counterparts.

6. Longer display life used to be a factor, but now LCD and Plasma sets both have at least 60,000 hour or higher lifespans.

DISADVANTAGES of LCD vs Plasma televisions include:

1. Lower contrast ratio, not as good rendering deep blacks, although the increasing incorporation of LED backlighting has narrowed this gap.

2. Not as good at tracking motion (fast moving objects may exhibit lag artifacts) - However, this is improving.

3. Not as common in large screen sizes above 42-inches as Plasma. However, the number is growing fast, with 46 and 47-inch screen sizes becoming more common, and some LCD sets having a screen size as large as 65-inches also available to the general public.

4. Although LCD televisions do not suffer from burn-in susceptibility, it is possible that individual pixels on an LCD televisions can burn out, causing small, visible, black or white dots to appear on the screen. Individual pixels cannot be repaired, the whole screen would need to be replaced at that point, if the individual pixel burnout becomes annoying to you.

5. LCD televisions are typically more expensive than equivalent-sized Plasma televisions (although this is changing).

Difference between LCD and plasma

Answer: Outward appearances are definitely deceiving when it comes to LCD and Plasma televisions. Although both types of televisions are flat and thin, they employ different technology in an attempt to deliver similar results.

Plasma TV Overview

Plasma television technology is based loosely on the fluorescent light bulb. The display itself consists of cells. Within each cell two glass panels are separated by a narrow gap in which neon-xenon gas is injected and sealed in plasma form during the manufacturing process. The gas is electrically charged at specific intervals when the Plasma set is in use. The charged gas then strikes red, green, and blue phosphors, thus creating a television image. Each group of red, green, and blue phosphors is called a pixel (picture element).

Although Plasma television technology eliminate the need for the bulky picture tube and electron beam scanning of traditional televisions, because it still employs the burning of phosphors to generate an image, Plasma televisions still suffer from some of the drawbacks of traditional televisions, such as heat generation and screen-burn of static images.

LCD TV Overview

LCD TVs, on the other hand, use a different technology (see also question #1 for this same explanation).

Basically, LCD panels are made of two layers of transparent material, which are polarized, and are "glued" together. One of the layers is coated with a special polymer that holds the individual liquid crystals. Current is then passed through individual crystals, which allow the crystals to pass or block light to create images. LCD crystals do not produce their own light, so an external light source, such as florescent bulb is needed for the image created by the LCD to become visible to the viewer.

Unlike standard CRT and Plasma televisions, since there are no phosphors that light up, less power is needed for operation and the light source in an LCD TV generates less heat than a Plasma or traditional television. Also, because of the nature of LCD technology, there is no radiation emitted from the screen itself.

HDMI is becoming the connection standard for High-Definition consumer electronics products. The growth of HDMI is tremendous.

WHAT EXACTLY IS HDMI?
HDMI stands for "High-Definition Multimedia Interface." It provides an all-digital connection solution in one cable, with the potential for the most incredible video picture ever seen, combined with full, uncompressed digital audio sound. The HDMI connectivity standard was a result of a combination of giants in the industry getting together to create a high performance digital connection. Sony, Hitachi, Thomson (RCA), Philips, Matsushita (Panasonic), Toshiba, and Silicon Image are the founders of HDMI.

High-Definition, as we know it today is advancing rapidly, and will pale in comparison with the video of tomorrow. Soon, you will hear new buzz words like "deep color," higher refresh rates, and higher resolution displays. Driven by advances in computer, display, and source technologies that will enable consumers to achieve a more lifelike video experience, HDMI has updated its versions to reflect an increase in data capability. There have been five versions of HDMI since it's inception in 2002. The latest version provides for a superhighway of data for products that will come in the near future. Experiencing Windows 7 battery glitch?

Microsoft has kicked off an investigation into reports of various notebook battery "issues" plaguing a number of Windows 7 users.

According to Tony Bradley of PC World, the problems seem "sporadic," but fairly widespread.

"It is unclear whether affected systems are simply misreporting the battery life, or if the battery capacity is actually being permanently affected," wrote Bradley.

"[But] long before Windows 7 was released for general availability in October of 2009, users were reporting suspicious behavior with battery life, or at least reported battery life, when running the (release candidate) version."

Bradley explained that Windows 7 may not be reporting the remaining battery life correctly, or prematurely warning that the battery is nearly expired.

"There are users who have reported switching operating systems back to Windows Vista, or even a non-Windows operating system, and still experiencing drastically reduced battery life."

Indeed, ZDNets's Adrian Kingsley-Hughes notes that some users claim that Windows 7 is negatively affecting overall battery life and performance.

"Some are going as far as to say that their machines are virtually unusable when powered by the battery," stated Kingsley-Hughes.

"If all that wasn't bad enough, some users are going as far as to suggest that the problem is in fact physically damaging the battery because reverting to a different OS doesn't restore the battery to its previous state."

Be careful not to bump or drop your computer, and do not put any objects on top of it. The case, although strong, is not made to support extra weight.

When transporting your computer, we recommend that you put it in the original packaging materials.

Keep diskettes and your computer away from magnetic fields. Magnetic fields can erase data on both diskettes and hard drives.

Never turn off your computer when the hard drive light is on because data on the hard drive could be lost or corrupted.

Avoid subjecting your computer to extreme temperature changes. The case can become very brittle and easy to break in cold temperatures and can melt or warp in high temperatures. Damage due to either extreme is not covered by your warranty. As a general rule, your computer is safest at temperatures that are comfortable for you.

Keep all liquids away from your computer. When spilled onto computer components, almost any liquid can result in extremely expensive repairs that are not covered under your warranty.

Avoid dusty or dirty work environments. Dust and dirt can clog the internal mechanisms.
